Code of Conduct

Purpose

Epiphany Theatre is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all children and young people involved in our activities.

This Code of Conduct sets out the standards of behaviour expected of all adults working with or supporting young people through Epiphany Theatre.

This Code applies to:

  • Staff (paid and unpaid)

  • Freelance practitioners

  • Volunteers

  • Trustees

  • Visiting professionals and contractors

All adults are expected to follow this Code at all times.

Professional Standards

All adults working with Epiphany Theatre must:

  • Act as positive role models at all times

  • Treat children and young people with respect, fairness, and dignity

  • Maintain clear professional boundaries

  • Use appropriate language, tone, and behaviour

  • Promote a culture free from bullying, harassment, discrimination, or intimidation

Professional conduct is expected both during sessions and in any related communications.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

All adults must:

  • Prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children and young people

  • Follow Epiphany Theatre’s Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy

  • Remain vigilant to signs of abuse, neglect, or safeguarding concerns

  • Report any concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

  • Never promise confidentiality to a child or young person

Failure to follow safeguarding procedures may result in immediate action.

Appropriate Relationships & Boundaries

Adults must:

  • Maintain appropriate professional relationships at all times

  • Avoid favouritism or inappropriate familiarity

  • Not exchange personal contact details with students

  • Not engage in private or secretive communication with students

  • Avoid being alone with a child unless this is planned, approved, and risk-assessed

Physical Contact

Drama and performance activities may sometimes involve movement, proximity, or physical contact.

Any physical contact must:

  • Be necessary, appropriate, and clearly explained

  • Be age-appropriate and proportionate

  • Take place with the young person’s consent where appropriate

  • Never be secretive, forced, or inappropriate

Communication & Online Conduct

Adults must:

  • Communicate with young people in a professional and appropriate manner

  • Use approved communication channels

Photography and video recording of young people must only take place with appropriate consent.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Epiphany Theatre is committed to inclusion and respect.

All adults must:

  • Treat all children and young people equally

  • Respect differences in identity, background, and ability

  • Challenge discriminatory language or behaviour

  • Support a welcoming and inclusive environment

Health & Safety

Adults must:

  • Follow all health and safety guidance and risk assessments

  • Ensure activities are appropriate to the age and ability of participants

  • Report hazards, injuries, or concerns promptly

  • Model safe and responsible behaviour

Breaches of the Code

Breaches of this Code of Conduct may result in:

  • A discussion or formal warning

  • Additional training or supervision

  • Suspension or termination of involvement

Serious breaches, particularly those involving safeguarding, will be dealt with immediately and may be referred to external safeguarding authorities
